a broad range of biomass feedstocks for low cost production of
biogas. However, AD efficiency is highly dependent on the type of
feedstock. For example, digestion of livestock manure is more efficient
than digestion of lignocellulosic biomass because of the
complexity of lignocellulose. Consequently, pretreatment (including
physical, chemical, or biological) is commonly employed to decrease
the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic feedstocks to anaerobic digestion
for increased biogas yield. Pretreatment can decrease crystallinity of
cellulose, increase accessible surface area, and reduce lignin content,
depending on the functioning mode of the pretreatment methods.
