The prevalence, causes and consequences of anaemia
vary by trimester. A nationwide survey in China indicated that iron-deficiency anaemia is higher in the third trimester than earlier in pregnancy
(16)
. Anaemia in the first and second trimesters, but not in the third, is associated with low birth weight, preterm delivery and stillbirths
. The purpose of the present study is to report the pre-
valence and determinants of anaemia among Chinese pregnant women in two provinces from 1993 to 2005. Information on the prevalence and determinants of anaemia will help to inform appropriate interventions to prevent pregnancy-related anaemia in China.
