Seeds of China kenaf variety “Guangdong 743-2” were used because of their high fiber yields (3 tons/ha). Seeds were surface sterilized first for 30 min by fungicide (Benlate, 1 g/l) and then immersed in a solution of 0.1% mercuric chloride (HgCl2). After 10 min, seeds were quickly washed with ethanol (95%) and then soaked for 20 min in a 50% aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite (12◦). Finally, they were rinsed 3 times for 10 min with sterile distilled water.
