2.3. Healthcare solid waste
Healthcare wastes (HSW) include plastic syringes, animal tissues, bandages, cloths, and so on. This type of waste is
produced by the treatment, diagnosis, and immunization of humans and/or animals at hospitals, veterinary and healthrelated
research facilities, and medical laboratories. These HSWs contain infectious waste, toxic chemicals, and heavy
metals. Several may contain substances that are radioactive. Libya contains 193 hospitals [
