The story of abusing and extreme violent in welcoming ceremony, the seniors marking the new students with hot metal heated with coal. But, they are uncertain about if the picture was real, because there is no picture of burned wound, we're trying to investigate on this. But even if it is a prank, it is still very mind threatening, it is illegal.
The pictures leaked from an anti-hazing and anti SOTUS in Thai Facebook community started just an hours ago, bring shock to Thai internet as this dark side of SOTUS never been show before in public.
There are so many cases before but not many cases went to court as the victim feared of humiliation and later abuses from the seniors or brainwashed friends. It is very common most Thai people don't give a thing about abusing or any crime it it did not get to the point that someone injured badly or died. There is a case a student died from torching by drunken senior. news.sanook.com/crime/crime_20…
I would like to called it brainwashing because of how the SOTUS system work. I'd give an example of what I've experienced when it was the beginning of semester 1 when I was in first year.
It began as it was my first day at the university, the seniors met us, they told us we have something to do every 12:00-13:00 the days we have class. We must gather in lines and walk into a room, the room they call "Cheering Room".
The senior gathered in the room, an empty room, nothing in it but closed windows and seniors standing around the room. They stood silent, they looks straight ahead, no movement, like lots of dead bodies standing but their faces looks serious. There are about hundreds of them, we are about two hundreds. Inside, we see lots of little note books on the floor with our students numbers on it, we walked into position the books marked, we don't know what's going to happened. There are several shouters(we called wark in Thai, responsible for shouting and speaking things in very violent way and really loud noise), they start to say "why you're late?". A girl reply "we do have classes, too far away from this room". "NOO" he shouted very violently, saying that "you're not suppose to reply without raising hands". The girl sounded frightening saying sorry. The guy shout again that you're not suppose to say without raising. And we learn more rules of the room, I don't want to say much because they are a lot, lots more. And they told us to pick the notes on the floor, it's the university ceremonial song. He told us to sing loudly, we don't even know how to sing it. Then we started guessing what we've heard a day before should be right. When we started the guy shouted again, the sound like thunder wanting to smacked into someone ears and could make a ringing sound inside. The seniors around start singing, it was so loud, they sing like it is the end of the world. I thought that it's very nonsense. But they do, they do serious about it, they said it's the pride of our number one university. So what? We are just student, how you could set up such a mind threatening situation like this just to impart those pride I don't want to have. They scold us, more and more on every mistake, even we're at the limit , exhausted, they will try to made us sing more. It's a very effective psychological brainwashing progress. They try to make us believe in the pride, in the way we have wonderful buildings, statues, in the way university has its power to do lots of nonsense activity they wish to do and to make us believe that we must pay respect to the seniors and bring pride to the university. And they said it's the way to made us stronger, toloranced to all situations we might meet in the future. But? Is this necsessary? It's like you can be dictator and be violent just to gain respect? That's nonsense and very dangerous way of thinking.
It didn't got me, I stop going to that room after just a week(it continued for 2 months), and most of my friends that got brainwashed always talked to me like I did something very wrong just because I didn't attended the even(the seniors said they're going to get punished by push-up or extra long singing if there are less people going). I did feel very bad about how Thai society is going to. I know my friends will do this to next generation this year, this is sad.
Anyway, it is getting too long, and in case you might not be interest in this story, I would like to end it here that the situation I was in was very little compared to what is happening around the country. it's going very bad. I hope Vice team will interest and get someone investigating this culture of mass mind controlling we're trying to stop. Feel free to ask more questions or get help in some social context and translation of what you might find.(Because most of these thing never get written in English, very rare)
