1. Introduction
Advanced sintering methods such as microwave and spark
plasma sintering have been used to sinter various metallic, ceramic
and composite materials due to their original distinct advantages
such as reducing the time and sintering temperature [1e3].
Furthermore, the both methods result in better control of grain
growth which has great influence on mechanical properties of
produced specimens [4]. In the case of metallic materials especially
aluminum, N. Saheb et al. [5] evaluated the mechanical properties
of Al6061 and Al2124 alloys by spark plasma and microwave sin-
tering. In another work reported by Ghasali et al. [6], it was found
the acceptable mechanical properties of Al/ZrB2 composite pre-
pared by spark plasma and microwave sintering compared to
conventional sintering.
The kind of reinforcement has a considerable effect on the
mechanical and structural properties of the composites. There is a
strong dependence on the kind of reinforcement and its volume
fraction [7,8]. Aluminum-boron carbides have been considered as
promising candidates for lightweight structural materials due to
the unique combination of properties such as low density and high
hardness [9,10]. But there are concerns over boron carbide's
chemical stability and its suitability as a reinforcement for Al.
