Families are not without conflict, as the reality of human relationships is never smooth. Today the older generation complains about the younger generation’s lack of respect and refusal to adhere to traditional values; but kinship unifies, and differences are forgotten in times of extreme need of assistance or if threatened by an “outsider.” Marriage in the Philippines is an alliance of families, particularly in the case of the wealthy and influential, and may serve political affiliations and business interests. It would be difficult to be married into a family where one is not welcome, or whose company one dose not enjoy, because there is a lot of “togetherness.” Rich families go on holiday together, often abroad, with parents paying for everyone; holiday homes are shared; and Sunday is a day for family get-togethers.
