The role of alley cropping systems in this development is
actually not fully investigated. It is known, that hedges with a
high share of trees serve as refuges for many species to retreat
from the fields when environmental conditions become harsh.
Inhabitants of forests, which perceive agricultural landscapes
as a barrier, use hedges as corridors connecting different
populations (Wo¨ llecke and Elmer, 2008). In the past, the
cultivation of such hedges was not very attractive for farmers.
Over the ecological advantages and disadvantages of alley
cropping systems within Europe and their impacts on
organisms only a small amount of data exists. To transfer
the broad knowledge regarding the bioecological functions of
hedges, case by case to the new land use systems is not
possible. The available data on alley cropping derive nearly
exclusively from comparatively young stands, because longtime
investigations of such land use systems are still missing.
In Germany, for example, alley cropping systems in practiceoriented
dimensions were planted for the first time only a few
years ago (Bo¨hm et al., 2008). However, long term studies may
begin and broad studies regarding the colonisation of such
land use systems by organisms are in progress
