Continuous Passive Motion (CPM)
• Passive motion performed by a mechanic device that move joint slowly and continuously through a controlled ROM.
• Effective in lessening the negative effects of joint immobilization in conditions such as arthritis, contractures, and intra-articular fractures.
• Effective in improving the recovery rate and ROM in variety of surgical procedures.
General Guidelines for CPM
• Suddenly used after surgery while the patient is still under anesthesia or as soon as possible if bulky dressings prevent early motion.
• Start at 20-30 degrees of movement and then increase gradually (10-15 degrees per day) within patient’s tolerance.
• Speed; 1 cycle per 45 sec or 2 min is well tolerated.
• Duration;less than 1 week or when a satisfactory ROM is reached. The amount of time on CPM is vary depending on treatment methods
