This is a comic fantasy, a fairy tale for adults. A young couple, Marina and Tom, have moved from London to a quiet village so he can take up a new job. Marina is becoming very bored with life in the village and at home. She hates the housework and the isolation. One day she makes a wish that someone will help her with the ironing. The wish comes true immediately and a young, attractive man comes to her house to do the ironing. When Tom returns from work Marina tells him about her ‘ironing man’. He becomes suspicious, thinking that she might be having an affair, and hires a private detective to follow her.
The next day, as Marina is rubbing her aching neck,
a woman masseuse called Tracy arrives at Marina’s house saying she’s been sent by the Ironing Man. Marina is delighted that a second wish has come true. Later that morning, Tracy’s boyfriend arrives to collect her. The private detective Tom has hired watches Tracy and her boyfriend leave the house, thinking that it is Marina.
Marina decides on a whim to go up to London to the National Gallery, where she bumps into the Ironing Man again. He tells her that she has one more wish. Her third wish is that her relationship with Tom will be revived.
Meanwhile, the private detective has followed Tracy and her boyfriend, and reports what he has seen to Tom. Tom is horrified and wonders what has gone wrong in his relationship with Marina that she should be leading this double life. He reluctantly looks at the photographs taken by the detective, only to discover that it is not Marina after all. Tom is overjoyed and decides to take Marina on holiday, where they fall in love all over again.
