To be of use in a collection, digital objects must be more than the collection of bits that result from creation or conversion. They need to be identified, described, stored, and disseminated. They may be rendered in different formats for different circumstances. Stored in repositories, each digital object must have its own unique identification, or name. The name is used to retrieve the item, associate metadata with it, associate it with other objects, and act as a reference in citation. The name should persist over time and over migration from one physical location to another, and should resolve quickly. The Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI) "handle" system(n7) is one of the best known and widely used naming and object management systems.
