I am not sure, if your impression is correct.
There are many horror stories, but there are also many stories of Western men living in Thailand for decades, who are totally happy living in a rural area with their Thai family.
If you want to live in Thailand for long-term, you have basically 2 choices,
a - to mix up with the locals, or
b - to bring your own family with you and to avoid contacts with locals except for the supply of your daily needs, food, furniture, medical care etc.
For sure, if you live in Thailand, you need NOT to integrate with the local Thai population. It's up to you.
You might choose your place of living in Thailand in an area with many other long-stay foreigners, you might buy your own condominium, you might apply for a visa like retirement without the support of a Thai wife ...
About Thai people - they are very different from each other.
I have met any kind of Thai - some are very honest, others try to cheat you whenever possible. Some are happy and sincere with a foreign husband, others consider a foreign (white) man solely as ATM for payments in return of sex. Some are acting very primitive and childish but are nice to foreigners, others are high educated, but unfriendly and discriminating.
Not so easy to meet the right people in Thailand.

Bv!l$#!t... I've never, ever experienced this, and I've been in just about every kind of flea pit bar and HiSo joint Thailand has to offer.
Good for you! I am sharing my and my friends' experiences and you can share yours. After AIDS hit, lots of places adopted "no farangs" rules. You did not run into those? Congrats! I have been kicked out and told- Row my rup kaak tang chat''. or "kow may rup farang!"
I also cannot even count how many times a Thai girl would tell me that walking with a farang means she is a whore. Why anyone would want to live in such a country is beyond me.
My other friends would report people not wanting to sit next to them on buses- just getting up and walking away, I had people not want to ride in the same elevator with me, also people crossing onto the other side of the street. Just like you are a n---er. And no, it is NOT my fault. Because I am in the Philippines now and nothing like this is happening and I am the same person.
As far as my being nuts, I don't think so. Then I would be saying the same about the Philippines but nothing like this is happening.
