This has accelerated land tenancy atomization among the peasantry (see Figure 5 above) through the biological development of the family (Chayanov 1966: 68) in a growingly land-scarce milieu where the population density almost tripled during the last thirty years (INE 2011). In fact, the more autarchic Q’eqchi’ family labor farms of twenty years ago stood just for 26% of total rural households in the northern lowlands in 2010 (Alonso-Fradejas et al, 2011: 66).
