Out-ofpocket
spending accounted for 12.9 percent of total health spending in 2013, mostly on nursing homes,
pharmaceuticals, and medical aids. For adults, there is an annual cap on cost-sharing equal to 2 percent of
household income; part of a household’s income is excluded from this calculation for additional family
members. About 0.5 million SHI insurees exceeded the 2 percent cap in 2012 and were exempted from costsharing
(Federal Statistical Office, 2014).
