While
evidence exists about the effects of small scale enterprises
on community ties, there is little empirical data to verify
the civic agriculture thesis. Moreover, some analysis and
critique suggests that recent forms of civic agriculture fail
to live up to early optimistic claims about the rebirth of
community through local agriculture (DeLind 1999, 2011;
Feagan and Henderson 2009; Pole and Gray 2013). This
study offers an empirical examination of whether civic
agriculture yields the added social benefits suggested by
the concept.
