The Sahara Desert in North Africa is characterized by an extremely dry and arid climate. This desolate landscape creates very unique sandstorms and winds. They have Arabic names such as haboob, khamsin and harmatta In the United States, a very different type of wind called a tornado routinely destroys homes in the flat Central U.S. states. Both these winds can have a devastating impact on local communities.
