ABSTRACT The Whitebacked Planthopper (WBPH), Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) has been a major pest in irrigated rice growing areas of Chiang Rai province since 2003. A light trap, an effective tool for monitoring the outbreaks of WBPH, was conducted in hot spot areas. A light trap was set in Chiangrai Rice Research Center while farmers' fields survey was carried out in Chiang Rai province during January 2009 to December 2010. The number of WBPH caught from a light trap was counted everyday throughout the year. The results showed that a light trap could collect a large number of WBPH. The highest number of WBPH from a light trap was 9,703 hoppers/trap/month which related to the WBPH outbreak in farmers' fields.
