Hard engineered structures have disrupted the sediment transformation and modified wave propagation patterns, often resulting in down-drift erosion or under cutting immediately in front of the works. Soft engineering structures allow for sediment movement along the shoreline and often try to replicate natural processes. The main issues encountered with using these structures is they require regular maintenance and do not prevent erosion during storms. China thus needs to establish a continuously effective coastal erosion management system, which can then be used to guide managers and stakeholders to balance environmental and economic needs
