On first arriving on the island, there were signs of flooding as we stepped off the boat. The gang-plank was no longer above water, sand bags had been stacked to keep the water out, and there were puddles every where.
“No matter, we’re here, lets see what we can see.” I’m something of an adventurer, put me in a situation where most people would think it wiser to turn around, I’ll be the first person to say, “Lets just see what’s around the corner!”
Around the corner, over the hill, through the flood water.
Around the corner we went, and discovered that there was a market that runs along the banks of the island. Most people’s houses serve a dual function, as home and market stall, on either side of the small street that runs around the island. We heard the market was fairly quiet on weekdays, but this day, it was deserted. The river had come up the banks of the island, and flooded the entire market, and further inland. Walking through the market and past some of the inhabitants, they didn’t seem too phased by the flood water affecting their business. Most people were still all smiles, and there were children splashing about in streets now claimed by the river.
