I bought this book on the sub title (the secret to a joy filled life), the happy face on the cover and the (mostly positive) reviews. I did not quite grasp the title - so to enlighten others who don't: the number references bible book Philippians 4, verse 8. None of the reviews mentioned this at the time I bought the book, so I'd like to fill this hiatus.
The introduction, just short of six pages, uses the word 'God' 32 times, and reveals that the trick is that 'you must learn to think like God thinks', though mr. Newberry wholeheartedly admits that this is impossible, because 'God is all-knowing and all-powerful'. At the end of the introduction, he states that it is all about '...joy by design - God's design.'
I was not really inclined to read further, but for this review I let my fingers be guided to randomly pick three pages and encountered tips like 'fake it (positive emotions) until you make it' (p96, the author words it more lenghty and less direct), personalizing and then memorizing a bible verse that reminds you how much God loves you (p169), and thanking God in advance for all the blessings he has in store for you over the next ten years (p189).
If you yearn for more like this, buy the book. Personally, the erudite and engaging 'Nature, Man and Woman' by Alan Watts invited me incomparably more deeply and eloquently to understand and change the way I think and feel about my place in the universe and my relationship to the world.
