There is some debate on how far participants should be encouraged to go in terms of altering what has been said or done but it is the responsibility of the researcher to control this procedure to allow for maximum information yield. It is also necessary to complete the dialectic aspect of the study: 'We have found that members' feed-back is very valuable and sometimes helps us see or emphasize something we missed' (Maykut and Morehouse, 1994, 147).
