Thais refer to the Hmong as the Meo. Having come from Southern China via Laos, they are now the second largest hill tribe in terms of their population. Extremely attached to their traditions, they experience the full rigours of mountain life at altitudes between 1 000 and 2 000m, growing, with a certain resistance, rice and maize in line with the wishes of the authorities who try to discourage them from the illegal cultivation of the opium poppy. This unusually named Hmong village is named after a nearby microwave station
