Wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L., also known as Fructus lycii, family
Solanaceae) is a perennial, deciduous shrub growing in northwest
China and the Mediterranean region. It is fast growing, has
a deep, well-developed root system, is tolerant to drought and cold
and has extensive adaptability (Chang & So, 2008; Chen et al.,
2004). Its fruit has been used for centuries in China as a traditional
herbal medicine and as a valuable nourishing tonic (Committee of
Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2010).
