Even though not as effective on ‘Fox’, treatment
with 0.1 or 1.0 μL·L–1 1-MCP for 6 h or
more reduced petal abscission to control rates.
In potted flowering begonias, roses, and kalanchoes,
treatment with 1-MCP did not enhance
the display life of plants unless they
were treated with exogenous ethylene (Serek
et al., 1994). In our studies, 1-MCP decreased
rates of petal abscission in flowers held in air
compared to those nontreated flowers held in
air (Figs. 2–5). This is especially apparent in
flowers of ‘Fox’ (Fig. 3). Our data demonstrate
that 1-MCP at 1.0 μL·L–1 for 6 h would be an
effective treatment for all four cultivars
studied. Serek et al.
