Waewdao also explains that the title is not about fighting authority or resisting outside forces, but rather facing the truth about ourselves: “The culture police character shows how narrow-minded some people can be who claim to practice Lanna arts and culture. I might even be one of those people. I’m not trying to make them necessarily look bad, but you can find them in everyday life here.”
Ultimately, Waewdao believes Lanna people need to fix their own problems for themselves and that they also have the inherent strength of character to do it: “Lanna Rebel is about the freedom of being who you are and also finding out if and why society accepts or rejects you for who you are. It’s about what’s happening right now to freedom of expression in Lanna culture. People like me can perform being a rebel and in this way find ourselves and present our natural identity as rebels.”
