The exercise goal of the lifestyle intervention was 30 to 45
minutes of supervised, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on 3 days
each week. Exercise sessions were scheduled before evening meals
or on Saturday mornings. The options were brisk walking on a
treadmill or nearby track or riding a cycle ergometer. Each session
included a 5-minute warm-up period. Participants who had not
previously been physically active started with 20 minutes of walking
per session and increased the duration of exercise over several weeks
until their goal was met
