Benefits of AVF vs. CVC include lower rates of infection
and thrombosis, superior dialysis adequacy, greater freedom
for activities such as bathing and swimming,
and longevity of
access site. Disadvantages are delays in maturation (up to 2–6
months), needle pain,
arm immobilization during hemodialysis,
and risk of dysfunction with eventual compromise of the
vascular network.
Advantages of CVC include immediate
delay-free access, needle-free dialysis, and greater freedom
of movement during dialysis.
