The sago palm (Metroxylon spp.) is 6-14 m tall and hapaxantic
- that is, it flowers once and dies shortly thereafter.
Just before flowering, the plant converts its stored nutrients
into starch, which tills the trunk. Desiccated products
made from sago starch can be stored for exceptionally long
periods.
