DeLind (1999) walked away from her experience on a CSA farm disappointed, jaded and
exhausted. “We voluntarily exploited ourselves to give those who purchased shares a full return
on their investment…In classic farmer fashion we personally absorbed the risk and gave away
our labor (and our hearts) in the process” (p. 6). Although DeLind unabashedly declared her
motivation and inspiration to be the creation of community, she admitted it was difficult to
remove herself and the farm from what she called “the pervasive market mind set – the tyranny
of capital” (p. 5) that influenced the farm’s behavior and prompted reactions counter intuitive to
the original goals.
