Beginning Level I & II
The beginning level class focuses on basic grammar and simple comprehension of spoken and written English. No prior
English knowledge is necessary to study this level.
Course Objective: This class is an interdisciplinary course in beginning level English with emphasis on grammar, listening, reading and conversational skills. By the end of this course, students should be able to read and understand basic composition in English and be able to communicate verbally in a confident manner. Students will expand their knowledge of basic grammar and vocabulary and prepare themselves for an intermediate-level understanding and use of English langauge. Students will be exposed to basic sentence structure and will be provided the necessary grammatical tools with which to add more details and complexities to their spoken and written language skills. Students will be able to speak and write complete, though perhaps simple, sentences upon completion of this course.
Intermediate Level I & II
This level focuses on reading comprehension, building vocabulary, grammar, and conversation skills. Most students at this level have a good understanding of English and are often ready for standardized testing.
Course Objective: This class is an interdisciplinary course in intermediate level English with emphasis on grammar, listening, reading, writing and conversational skills. By the end of this course, students should be able to compose complete, semi-complex sentences and be able to organize a paragraph. In addition, students should be able to understand most informal questions, statements, and conversational English at a normal speed. Through guided discussion activities, students will learn to participate effectively in social and academic conversations. By having focused on more complex grammatical constructions, students will have the ability to use progressive forms of present, past, and future tenses.
Advanced Level I & II
Professional/College level conversation abilities and knowledge of the subtleties of English are necessary to succeed in this level. Advanced conversation, pronunciation, and reading comprehension are the main focus of the Advanced level to enhance the student’s grasp of English.
Course Objective: By the end of this course, students should feel comfortable writing essays with basic control of organization, be able to extract key information from academic material, and speak fluently with only occasional misuse of idioms. Additionally, students will have complemented their understanding of colloquial language and will be able to correctly and effectively use grammar, punctuation, and spelling in all forms of writing. Students at this level are well on their way to fluency and should have the ability to thrive in social, professional, and academic settings.
TOEFL Preparation
Intermediate or Advanced level of English
This class is for the English language learner who plans to take the iBT or paper based TOEFL test, a standardized test for non-native speakers wishing to transfer to a two- or four-year college in the U.S.
This course focuses on the four elements of the TOEFL test: reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking.
Course Objective: Integrated skills are now emphasized on the TOEFL test, which demand that students be able to read a passage, listen to a passage, and write an essay on the information. The TOEFL Preparation Course at USA English Language Center will help students prepare for the exam and feel confident on the day of the test. Our English Language Center has a high success rate with qualified instructors ready to cover the important topics. Several students in our TOEFL Preparation Course graduate to one of our many Certificate and Degree Programs offered at the SDUIS University Department, earning a Bachelors, Masters, PhD or Certificates.
