While the education and practice of nurses incorporates
interdisciplinary collaboration, the concept is usually understood
within the context of other health disciplines. Nurse
leaders engaged in the promotion of health equity will need
to collaborate with a wider network of professions.
Lawmakers, union leaders, educators, urban developers, and
business leaders are just a few of the experts needed to create
strategies for achieving health equity. Nurses must collaborate
with leaders from fields outside the health care system to
create strategies which address social determinants of health
such as housing access, school lunch nutrition, access to
higher education, and working conditions. Using these
approaches, nurses will redefine interdisciplinary collaboration
to include a broader range of perspectives and ideas
