Dimensions of attitudes
Just as psychologists first identify a single dimension along which people can be said to very (e.g., sociable-shy) and then try to collapse the very large number of such dimension into a simple framework, so does much attitude research go into trying to ascertain just which dimensions are fundamental. The commonest hypothesis has been that there is just one basic dimension, namely, liberalism-conservatism. This view may have been based on the tradition, in European parliaments, of having a spectrum of political views, from left to right, or from radical to reactionary. Various investigators(e.g., Newcomb, 1943; Campbell,1965) reported that a number of specific attitudes correlated in such a way as to verify the basic dimension as liberal-conservative.
There are, however, some dissident views on this subject. Stagner and Katzooff (1942) intercorrelated 18 opinions and found three factors, which they called economic conservatism, sympathy for the underdog, and aggressive nationalism. Hicks and concluded that four dimension were needed: economic, political, religious, and esthetic. This means that, according to their data, a religious conservative was no more likely to be economically conservative than economically liberal. Most observers question this, believing that in general, these attitudes do vary together.
