Concluding Thoughts
For years now I have had the privilege of observing frail and confused
individuals take on and demonstrate qualities typically associated with
self-actualizing persons, and I continue to be amazed and inspired by the
endless possibilities that music can provide for this population. I challenge
all music therapists working in dementia care to consider the ways that they
perceive their clients both in group and in individual settings. By shifting our
clinical perspectives and viewing these clients as musicians and essential
contributors to a rich and vibrant musical ensemble, we can open up a whole
new understanding of group work in dementia care.
