NTRODUCTIONOpioid addiction is a growing public health concern in theUnited States. Nearly one-third of those being treated for opi-oidaddictionarewomenofchildbearingage.1It is critical foropioid-addicted pregnant women to be treated properly, bothto reduce potential fetal exposure to illicit drugs and to pre-ventfetalwithdrawalifopioiduseisabruptlyterminated.Theadverse maternal-fetal effects of opioid abuse and misuse dur-ing pregnancy include intrauterine growth restriction, placen-tal insufficiency, preterm rupture of membranes, prematurebirth, postpartum hemorrhage, and perinatal mortality.2
