Harry Potter thought that he was an ordinary boy. He lived with his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, along with his cousin Dudley. Harry believed that his parents had died in an automobile accident when he was just a baby. As a result, he was an orphan who was forced to live with terrible people.
The Dursley's treated Harry horribly. While their own son, Dudley, got everthing he wanted (including 39 presents for his birthday), Harry was forced to live in small supply closet underneath the stairs. Harry's life was miserable until he began receiving mysterious letters in the mail.
The first time Harry got a letter, his Uncle Vernon took it and destroyed it. He refused to let Harry see any of the letters, even though they kept coming, day after day. Finally, the Dursleys received an unexpected visitor: a giant man named Hagrid.
Hagrid was from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It turned out that Harry was a wizard himself! He was finally old enough to begin attending the Hogwarts school. The Dursleys were forced to let Harry go to the school, but they were not happy about it (they didn't like "magic").
This story chronicles Harry's first year at Hogwarts. He meets new friends named Hermione and Ron, and together they have several adventures. Along with taking his magic classes, Harry discovers and important truth about the magical world.
