Lightly dozing, Sam absent-mindedly scratched the side of his rather large belly as he sat on the concrete, comfortable in his fifth place position in line. Ever since the announcement of the Xbox 720, he had been eagerly awaiting its release. No, he wasn't going to do any of that pansy pre-order online shit (it's not like the pre-orders were full by the time he got there…). He was going to wait in line and snag one the moment it came out. Now, at the crack of dawn, there were only five hours until the store opened. Considering he'd been waiting in line in front of this video game store since closing time at 8pm the previous day, that wasn't very long.
His massive belly, looking as if he were smuggling four full-sized watermelons, was a recent development. Despite it, he wasn't going to let it alter his plans in the slightest. Sure, it took him forever to walk anywhere and he finally had a use for that (ugly) pullover hoodie his overweight cousin had left him last summer. Luckily, he could still wiggle into his old gym sweatpants, but only just. Otherwise, no problems. His belly twinged uncomfortably, his back aching from sitting so long on concrete. He shifted position slightly, ensuring his belly was still propped by his legs.
It started a week ago. He had started feeling ill, like he was about to get a massive cold. Instead, his belly began expanding. Although he was a little chubby — not fat, he just had some padding — that still didn't justify this sort of weight gain. Now any rational human would have gotten their ass to a hospital at that point. He instead chose to ignore it — nothing would come between him and his shiny new Xbox. The closer the release date loomed, the more he became blind to what was happening to his body. Lucky for him, his belly seemed to stop growing about two days ago. Though, if he had taken a moment to reflect on his strange situation for a moment, he would have noticed a suspicious gap in his memory, around the time he went to an Xbox LAN party, a few days before his body had started changing.
His belly twinged again, stronger this time. No position seemed to relieve his back ache. He wasn't going to get his nap. Another guy in line offered to make a run to the Starbucks next door and began taking orders. The blond young guy next to him, #4, ordered a latte-something. So he took one of the same, digging $5 out of his pocket and handing it to the gofer. The guy and his friend came back 15 minutes later and passed out the drinks. He took a drink of his coffee. Not bad, but his stomach didn't agree. He only just managed to scramble over to the curb (and the drain) before he vomited. #4 watched, concerned.
"You okay, man?" he asked.
Sam nodded, puking until his stomach was completely empty. Washing his mouth out with the warm coffee, he took to drinking it only in very small sips, which his stomach seemed to be okay with. His back was really hurting by the point, the pain coming in waves. He decided to sit in a deep crouch instead, hunched over so his belly was resting on the concrete between his legs. It helped a little.
"Four hours left!" Someone called out. A small cheer from those who were awake. He smiled, this was the nicest launch date line he'd ever been in. The Black Friday line a couple years back was the most brutal, terrible weather and a
