Kearney (2010), in noting that many principals leave the position within the first five
years and others never enter the position because of its overwhelming complexities,
called attention to the importance of leadership training for principals:
When novice principals are able to improve and broaden their portfolio of skills, they are on a
path to make a difference, stay on the job, and become highly accomplished leaders who use
their expertise to affect successful teaching and learning (p. 18).
