More than 10 different G-6-PD variants have been described in various parts of Thailand.
However, those responsible for G-6-PD deficiency in northeastern Thai population is poorly documented. The present study showed that in this region of Thailand, G-6-PD Viangchan is the most common variant, with a frequency of 63%, the highest ever reported in Thailand. G-6-PD Viangchan is also the most common variant among Cambodians and Laotians
whose countries share a common border with Thailand. The second most common variant was G-6-PD Canton, commonly found among the Chinese population [25,26], followed by G-6-PD Mahidol, most
common in the Myanmar population [14,27], indicating the presence of people originating from these regions in northeast Thailand.
