Recently, G. mangostana fruit extract is popularly used as a
food supplement while the fruit rind extract has been used in
herbal medicines, herbal cosmetics and pharmaceutical products
for treatment of acne. Due to wide therapeutic uses of
bioactive components and variation of their contents at
different stages of mangosteen fruits, this work was aimed to
determine and compare the contents of bioactive components
i.e. total phenolic compounds, total tannins, total flavonoids and
α-mangostin in young and mature fruit rind extracts from
G. mangostana. Moreover, free radical scavenging and antibacterial
activities against P. acnes and S. epidermidis, which are
bacteria involved in acne development, of these extracts were
also determined and compared.
