Spirulina maxima (strain synonyms: UTEX LB2342), recently reclassified as Arthrospira maxima, was obtained from the culture collection of Texas University (Austin, TX). A single trichome was obtained by micropipetting and grown in sterile SOT medium for a clonal culture (Ogawa & Terui, 1970). Growth was under aeration of filtered ambient air (0.1 l/min) in an illuminated chamber at
32 C with a 12:12 light:dark. The light consisted of a photosyn- thetically active radiation irradiance of 3000 lux from cool-white fluorescent lights. The SME was prepared by water extraction of lyophilised Spirulina maxima pellets at 40 C for 8 h, and centrifu- gation at 3500 rpm for 5 min. The precipitate was discarded, and the supernatant lyophilised and used as SME in this study.
