A. The background of the Study
Language plays an imfortant role in the society. It is impossible to communicate and to understand other people without language. It is use by people to get or share information to other. Like Morris, ‘’language is a system of sing which people think.” It means language is an important aspect of human interaction. With language, people communicate with each other. Therefore, language plays a very important role when people communicate with other people in different countries.
Language which is frequently used in international communication is English. English is widely used as a means of communication for people with different language background all over the world in their activities. Most people use English in their activities in daily life. Usually it is used for business purposes, technology,academic, occopation and so on.
English is a global language learned by many countries in the world either as aforeign language or the second langusge. Without using English as a communication tool, everybody will be left behind bacause communication is a bridge to get information , knowledge and cultue. Crystal said, ‘’Of course English is a global language, they would say.you hear it on television spoke by politicians from all over the world’’. Seeing English as aglobal language,most people all over the world try to be able to communicate each other in English.
English as a language has four basic skills; they are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening and reading are receptive skills,and speaking and writing are productive skills. Learning reading si very important. One of the reasons why it is important to read is because it can help students to catch the idea and information from the printed languages with reading, students can achieve the goal in learning process.
According to Staiger,”Reading is a term used to refer to an interaction by which meaning encoded in visual stimuli by an author becomes meaning in the mind of the reader.’ It can be cocluded that reading is indirect communication between the reader and writer.
Another reason why it is important to read is because reading also helps the students to enhance their imagination. According to Beuhl:
“Students need practice eliciting sensory images, especially in response to written texts. Strategies that prompt students to ignite their imaginations as reader are fundamental to improving reading comprehension. It can be seen reading as a basic one for the students to get information thought practice strategies.
There are two elements that make up the process of reading comprehension; vocabulary knowledge and grammar. In order to understand a text the students must be able to comprehend the vocabulary used in the piece of writing. Another element that makes up the process of reading comprehension is grammar, as stated of William, “While it comprehension”.
It means the student need practice and strategies in order to improving reading comprehension. It can be seen reading as
Student at sma negri 104 Jakarta face difficulties in learning English as well. Based on the observation and interview, the students have problem in reading. They simply read without understanding the meaning of the text because in teaching English the teacher often presteents the monotonous methods in teaching such as the students was asked to read silently and then answer the questions. Eventually, the students had difficulty in answering of the questions on the text. Besides, in teaching grammar the teacher teaches simply such as the studebts was assingned to translate from bahasa into English language with the appropriate structure. Finally, the student feel confused about grammar in the text that they read.
Considering the importance of grammar in reading comprehension,and looking at problems above, the writer is interested in conducting a research entiled the relasionship between students’ grammar mastery and reading comprehension of the SMPN NEGRI 104 Jakarta
B. The Identifications of the Problem
From the previous discussion of the background above, there are some identification of the problem.
1. What do the teachers do to impress the students’ simple present tense mastery as SMPN NEGRI 104 Jakarta?
2. How do the students’ respond in the comprehension lesson at SMPN 104 Jakarta?
3. Is there any relationship between students’ Simple present tense mastery and reading comprehension?
C. The Limitation of the Problem
In this research, the writer limits the seventh grade students at SMPN 104 East Jakarta in thinking more about the relationship of the students’ simple present tense to their reading comprehension.
D. The Question of the Problem
Based on the background of study above, the question of the problem is formulated as follows: ‘’Is there any significant relationship between students’ simple present tense and reading comprehension on the seventh grade students at SMPN NEGRI 104
E. The Purpose of the Study
In line with the question of the problem above, the study is aimed at finding out where or not there is a relationship between students’ simple present tense to their reading comprehension of the seventh grade students at SMPN NEGRI 104 Jakarta.
A. Grammar
1. The Definition of Grammar
Grammar is one of the English components that important to be learnt by student. It helps student are able to speak or writ correctly after they study about the grammar. Champan in M.F aveen patel and Praveen M Jain. (2008: 141) states;
Grammar is a study of language by specialist, made in order to establish, the rules and principles which underline the correct speech and writing, rule and principles which underline the correct speech and writing, rule and principles which are followed more or less unconsciously by the native speakers.’
According to the statements above, it is clear that grammar provides the correct rules and principles into speech and writing. So, students are expected to be able speak write well after they learn about grammar.
Meanwhile, Ron Cowan adds, “Grammar is the set of rules that describes how works and groups of words can be arranged to form sentence in a particular language”. It is enough to describe that grammar has influences into writing, because grammar makes students to be understands how to compose works and groups of words to be a good sentence which appropriates to the grammar rules.
Additionally, grammar has components and one of the components which also used in writing is tenses. According to Wikipedia, “Tense is a category that
Locates a situation in time, to indicate when the situation takes place.” It means that a tense show or tell when and where an action or event happens. It makes a sentence or paragraph to be easy for understanding by students.
Moreover, in grammar there are three tenses of basic categories, according to Eli Hinkel; in grammar there are three tenses in English: the past, the present, and the future. Can ” From opinions, it means the students must be mastery those basic tenses thus they able to write a good sentence and essay.
2. The understanding of Grammar Mastery
According to dictionary, “Marststery is complete control or knowledge”. It means mastery is the result of knowledge and continuously until capable to do something. Meanwhile, the write found one of mastery means from internet ,”Mastery is the blend skills and knowledge in a specific area”. It means that mastery is an ability to express someone skills and knowledge a specific are.
Based on the understanding of grammar and mastery above, the write can assume that grammar mastery means students have ability in understanding and using grammar in a specific area like speaking and writing.
3. The understanding of Simple Present Tense
The simple present tense that tells something which happens generally. According to Quirck in Eli Hinkle (2004: 145) that states; “The simple present tense refers to actions/events that take place generally in the present, but not necessary at the present moment or time.” It means that simple present tense use to refer an event that happens now and also refer to an event that happens generally or habitual activities.
Meanwhile, Andrea DeCapua adds, “Present time generally does not refer to event taking place now. Instead, the label “present time” refer to general habits, customs, characteristics, or truths.” It can be assumed that simple present tense refer to an event that exist always or the fact and the habitual activity. Furthermore, Michelle Maxom said, “you use the present simple tense to describe an action that happens generally or is generally true.” It is enough clear that simple present is used to describe an action or something that happens generally. It also can be use to talk about the fact and habitual activity. By using simple present tense in writing, student can describe their hobby, activities, and the fact.
4. The Form of Simple present Tense
As one of the grammar components, the simple present also has form that must be mastery by student. According Andrea DeCapu states, “the simple present tense consists the main verb in its simple form, except in third person singular when the –s inflection is added to the main verb,” Andrea also summarizes the sentences types in simple present tense that can be seen in the table below.
