As already identified in the study section overview, there are innumerable problems in identifying the tourism sector and incorporating all considerations in a single definition. The most intuitively logical definition is the one cited by Mathieson and Wall (1982) and, for the purposes of this module, this seems to be the most appropriate. They suggest that tourism activity relates to: ‘the temporary movement to destinations outside the normal home and workplace, the activities undertaken during the stay and the facilities created to cater for the needs of the tourist’.
This definition is appropriate for the purpose of this module since it conveys the essential elements of tourist activity.
