3.1.1. Case study 1.1 temperature
Together with the square-root model, the cardinal temperature
model with inflection (CTMI) is among the models most often
applied to describe the effect of temperature on the microbial growth
rate. To identify the four model parameters (Tmin, Topt, Tmax and mopt),
usually a large number of temperature levels (>10) is taken.
However, as our final aim is to efficiently identify all 10 parameters of
equation (1), a high number of temperature levels is not advisable as
this would lead to very complex, time-consuming designs.
In our approach, we limited ourselves to four levels. This implies
that we tried to estimate the four CTMI parameters from four static
experiments. These four levels have been selected within a con-
strained temperature region [Tlow Thigh] to exclude temperatures
with very low growth rates that make differentiation between
growth, lag and inactivation impossible. Within this frame, two
different approaches have been compared. (1) Four equidistant
temperature levels within [Tlow Thigh] are included in the design. (2)
