As models move from
the 2D to the 3D
space, the need for
standardization in
3D imaging becomes increasingly
apparent, especially for designing
3D modeling tools, evaluating
3D model-producing applications,
and performing stability testing
on 3D modeling–reliant instruments
and software. The IEEE
Computer Society sponsors a
working group—Practical Applications
of 3D Medical Modeling—to
develop the 3D medical imaging
standards to cover modeling, visualization,
simulation, data storage,
and related areas, but generally
speaking, broad standardization
for 3D medical models is still lacking.
As part of that working group,
we have some suggestions for
technical standards related to 3D
medical images.
