Volkswagen suspends sale of thousands of cars in Britain fitted with cheat devices SCANDAL-HIT Volkswagen has taken 4,000 cars off the market in Britain amid expectations that 1.2million of its UK diesel models are to be recalled after the carmaker admitted they were fitted emission cheating software. Cars that could feature the so-called "defeat devices," which allowed the brand to cheat US emissions tests, have now been suspend from sale in the UK. The brand has reassured Volkswagen owners that vehicles are "technically safe and roadworthy" and that it is identifying technical solutions to correct affected cars. Volkswagen hopes to have an action plan with solutions ready and presented to relevant authorities by the end of October Europe's largest car brand faces a criminal investigation and up to £11.6billion (S18bn) fines after it fitted diesel vehicles with devices that allowed them to pass US emissions tests. During normal driving the cars give off between 10 and 40 times the legal pollution limit, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It's estimated that the cars could have created extra pollution equivalent to the entire output of Britain's power stations as a result of the deceit. The brand, which is in the same group as Audi, Porsche, Skoda. Seat, Bentley and Lamborghini, has admitted that up to 11 million of its cars could have cheated their way through worldwide standards, including Britain and Europe.
