Caffeine may help enhance long-term memory after you consume it, according to research from Daniel Borota and team to investigate the effects of Caffeine, notes that although previous research has analyzed the effects of caffeine as a cognitive enhancer, whether caffeine can impact long-term memory has not been studied in detail. To find out, the investigators analyzed 160 participants aged between 18 and 30 years, and showed them various photos of items at the outset, asking study subjects to classify the items as “indoor” or “outdoor.” Half the participants were given a 200 mg of caffeine in the form of a pill after that classification, the other half a placebo. One day later, all the participants were shown the same pictures, as well as some they hadn’t seen before. They were asked whether each photo was new, old or similar to the originals. From this, the researchers found that subjects who took the caffeine were better at identifying pictures that were similar, compared with participants who took the placebo. Thus, the research conclude that a dose of at least 200 mg is required to observe the enhancing effect of caffeine on consolidation of memory.
