Incineration does reduce the volume of solid wastes, by about 90 percent. But though removes many harmful chemicals from wastes and has a potential to produce energy, the capital construction costs of incinerators are very high. Incineration produces ashas that are rich in other chemical in significantly toxic amounts (dioxins, furnans, hydrocarbons, lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury, and zinc). It does little to discourage the discourage the production of such wastes and transfers many of them from one sink (the landfill) to another (the atmosphere)
