generally decreased as grade level increased, except for grade 6.
Table 3 shows situations in which children first tried alcohol. Most children
indicated a family member was responsible for their first trying (about
78%) and o. obtaining (about 56%) their first drink. Approximately 32%
reported their first drink was tried by drinking from someone else's glass.
The dominant reason for trying alcohol was a personal factor, curiosity
(69%), while modeling by family members was also important (about 44%)
(see Table 3) Only 13% reported drinking alcohol because their friends
drink. Television commercials and other media advertisements were not influential
with this age group to try drinking.
Children reported negative attitudes about drinking (see Table 4).
