Your student ID / matric card is valid for the entire duration of study and serves a number of important functions:
Personal identification and confirmation that you are a student at the University of St Andrews for purposes of voting in student elections and to gain access to the University Library and student Union.
Swipe / proxy card for access to many University buildings, for example, Classrooms and managed PCs.
Library card. The barcode and 10 digit number on the rear of the card is used by the Library to allow access to the Main Library building and to manage your Library record including the issuing books.
While it is not compulsory for students to carry their student ID / matric card with them at all times, students should be aware that one of the primary purposes of that card is to control access to services provided by or through the University. Therefore, where an individual is not in possession of their student ID / matric card they may not be able to access University services. Obvious examples include access to buildings where the card is used to control access. The University therefore advises that students carry their student ID / matric card with them at all times.
It is important that you look after and protect your student ID / matric card. If this is lost or stolen your identity could be used fraudulently. If your card is lost or has been stolen you should act promptly. See below (Lost cards or Stolen cards) for details on what to do.
