The study was carried out in Singapore, a society with a high collectivism
score in the study of Hofstede (1980). A total of 345 participants from an
organization undergoing a two-day AL program participated in this research.
Participants were tested just before starting the program and immediately after
completing the program. Over the two-day program, participants worked in
15-member teams and were made to go through traditional AL challenges such
as “Spider Web”, “Nitro Crossing”, “Trust Fall”, and other rope activities
(Crawford, 1988; Gass et al. 1992). Of the participants, 82 percent were male, 70
percent were of Chinese roots, 20 percent ofMalay roots, 7 percent of Indian roots
and the remaining 3 percent from various other national backgrounds. A
majority of the participants was in the 20-34 age group (49 percent), with the
highest percentage (18 percent) in the 25-29 age group. The medium age group
was 30-34. Most of the participants (53 percent) had between seven and ten years
of education. A large proportion of them (26 percent) had been with their
employing organization for between 20 and 30 years.
